Belmopan, November 16, 2013

FC Belize bombed the Belmopan Bandits 3-2 at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan on Saturday night.

The Bandits gave up an auto-goal when Floyd Jones tried to head the ball to his goalie Woodrow West, but instead beat West and put it in the net in the 4th minute of play, prompting Bandits’ coach Edmund Pandy to speedily replace Jones with Tyrone Pandy.

Jarret Davis made it 2-zip in the 17th minute when his execution of a corner kick escaped West.

Bandits’ top striker Deon Macaulay and Jerome “Jaro” James counterattacked furiously with the help of midfielders Elroy Kuylen, David Trapp, Gilbert “Hoof” Swazo and Denmark Casey. The visitors’ defense held them off until the 24th minute when the Bandits won a free kick, and Macaulay worked his magic, bending it like Beckham over an improperly positioned wall of defenders, but FC Belize took a 2-1 lead into the half time break.

The Bandits goofed in, giving up a penalty, and Jarret Davis converted to lead 3-1 in the 50th minute. MaCaulay narrowed the deficit with a 2nd goal for the Bandits in the 78th minute, but the Bandits failed to equalize before the final whistle.

A lone strike by PG’s top striker Franz Vernon gave the Paradise Freedom Fighters a 1-0 win against San Ignacio United at the Toledo Union field on Sunday afternoon.

The BDF held the Police United to a nil-zip draw at the Carl Ramos Stadium in the culture capital of Dangriga on the eve of Garifuna Settlement Day, November 18.

Jody Polanco takes on Jarret Davis

Belmopan, November 16, 2013

The Paradise Freedom Fighters of Punta Gorda secured the No. 1 spot in the Premier League of Belize as they struggled to a 1-1 draw with FC Belize in Week 9 of the Belikin Cup football tournament at the MCC Grounds on Sunday.

FC Belize looked to get on the scoreboard early when they set table in the goal area for Kevin Lino who could not catch up to the ball. PG’s Alexander Peters and Franz Vernon tried a sandwich play on FC Belize goalie Glenford Chimilio, who took them on and came out of his goal; but Shannon Flowers bailed out Chimilio after Vernon had the keeper beat.

PG’s goalie Stephen Polonio made a save in the 12th minute that deflected the ball to Mark “Kelo” Leslie who sent it into the net to give the city squad the 1 – zip lead up to the half.

In the 2nd half, Chimilio continued to live dangerously as he came up with a couple of saves to deny the visitors, but the game was almost over when Lisbey Castillo found Franz Vernon who blasted the ball into the far corner for the 1-1 draw.

Benque Viejo, January 12, 2013

Verdes F.C. of Benque Viejo Del Carmen will take on 4th place FC Belize when the Belikin Cup football playoffs kick off at the MCC Gardens in Belize City on Sunday, January 19th.

Verdes drew 0-0 with 2nd place team Belmopan Bandits at the Marshalleck Stadium on Sunday night, but 3 players will have to sit out the first game of the playoffs because of red card suspensions from Sunday: Verdes’ Kareem Haylock and Bandits’ defenders Tyrone Pandy and Shane Armstrong. The “Mean Green Machine” could not get their mojo in gear on their muddy field, but the pressure of their attacks forced the cardinal Bandits to some desperate moves.

Verdes also killed the playoffs hopes of defending champs Police United by a 1-1 draw on Friday night.

The No. 3 seed Belize Defence Force will challenge the Bandits at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium on Saturday night, as they eliminated the Paradise Freedom Fighters from the playoffs by a 1-1 draw at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga on Sunday. Alex Peters had scored for Paradise in the 40th minute, but in the 2nd half, BDF’s Ambrose Thomas equalized in the 80th minute.

Woodrow West saves the ball

Belmopan, January 18, 2013

The Belmopan Bandits are almost into the Belikin Cup football finals, after they blasted the Belize Defense Force 3-0 at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan on Saturday night.

The BDF remain undaunted, even though they now need 4 goals to win the rematch when they host the Bandits at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga on Saturday night, January 25.

The Bandits got the early lead when Ricky Ricketts took down David “Mikey” Madrid inside the 18-yd box in the 14th minute. Central referee Christopher Reid awarded Bandits a penalty and David Trapp stepped up to convert for a 1-0 lead.

The BDF’s Shane “Chucky” Flores and Ambrose “Fubu” Thomas tried to equalize with the help of midfielders Paul Nunez, Abraham Chavez, Phillip Lewis and Khalil Velasquez, but the Bandits’ defense: Dalton Eiley, Ian Gaynair, Eric Rodriguez and Lincoln Wiltshire, broke up their plays, sending the ball forward to their midfielders: Deris “Colombia” Benavides Denmark Casey and Denis Serano to renew the attack

In the 2nd half, BDF goalie Derol Roches deflected a shot by Mikey Madrid to the feet of Deon Macaulay who sent it right back into the net to lead 2-0.

Another defensive blunder by BDF defender Harrison Tasher caused referee Reid to award the Bandits a 2nd penalty in the 76th minute, which Macaulay converted for the 3-0 win.

Verdes FC of Benque Viejo del Carmen entered the playoffs as the top seed, but the No. 4 seed FC Belize held them scoreless in the other playoff game at the MCC Garden on Sunday. Verdes will have the moral support of their home fans when they try for the win in Game 2 at the Marshalleck Stadium on Saturday night, but FC Belize will also be trying for the win to enter the finals.

At the MCC, Verdes’ Marlon Meza and Gilroy “Bredda” Thurton had the support of midfielders Richard “Cheety” and Orlando “Lichy” Jimenez, Shamir Pacheco and Norman “Tilliman” Pipersburgh, but did not impress FC Belize goalie Glenford Chimilio.

FC Belize really needed to win at home, rather trying for a win on the road, but their strikers Jarret Davis, Devaugn Zuniga, Jorge Alexman, Kevin Lino, Mark “Kelo” Leslie and Ryan Gill, and even the subs: Germaine Foster, Avian “Chi-chis” Crawford and Stephen Baeza all came up empty.

Belize City, January 18, 2014

St. John’s College is undefeated with a 4-0 record in the high school football competition, posting their 4th victory in a 5-1 win over Wesley College at the M.C.C. Garden last Saturday afternoon.

SJC’s Sydney “Bucket” Bradley and Dimitri Fabro now lead the competition with 9 goals each after Bradley scored a hat trick and Fabro scored 2 goals for the 5-1 win. Jorge Perez and Trey Guy had supported their attacks on the wings, backed up Luis Acosta and Rayan Figueroa at midfield.

Bradley scored the 1st goal when he connected with a header in a cross to center from Trey Guy. SJC won a free kick and the execution by team captain Dimitri Fabro was textbook, sailing 35 yards just under the crossbar and into the net to make it 2-0.

Keiron Young embarrassed SJC’s goalie Khristopher Majarrez with a bouncer that found the back of the net, but it was Wesley’s only flash in the pan. SJC’s next attempt won a corner kick and again Fabro worked his magic with a banana kick that curved the ball over the goalie to the far post as SJC led 3-1 at the half.

In the 2nd half, Young eventually shifted to defense, because he could not escape the marking of SJC’s Kevin Garcia. The boys in blue brought in fresh troops: Tarique James, Gilbert Cal and Jorge Ramos, and when Wesley’s defense goofed into giving up a penalty, Bradley converted for a 4-1 lead. Guy found Bradley with another cross to center, and again Bradley did the honors with a right-away kick into the net, completing his hat trick for the 5-1 win.
